Services Summit Parliament House
The Summit brought together Australia’s leading experts from the major services sectors.
Delegates recognised that the global economic crisis provides both an opportunity and an imperative for Australia to drive reforms in Services.
There was agreement that services innovation is needed to drive productivity growth and deliver sustainable jobs. Innovation is about doing things better and smarter; it includes the application of smart designs, smart technologies, smart communications and advanced engineering to all key infrastructure builds- including those in current and future economic stimulus packages; the development of an innovative and world class educational sector; developing a creative tourism industry and an innovative and well managed financial services to name a few examples.
Highlights included a dinner address on the Impact of the economic crisis on global financial services by the Assistant Treasurer, Hon Chris Bowen, MP; a keynote address by the Minister for Small Business, Independent Contractors and the Services Economy, Hon Dr Craig Emerson, MP, addresses by Richard Vahtrick, IBM Global Services; James Bradfield Moody, CSIRO; Dr Glenn Withers Universities Australia; Ms Jane Drake-Brockman, Tesol, Mr Ian Satchwell ACILTasman, Mr Stephen Bartos, Allen Consulting and Professor Roy Green UTS, as well as talks from representatives of all the main services sectors including by John Weber, CEO Minter Ellison; David Epstein, QANTAS; David Quilty, Telstra; John O'Shaughnessy, Investment and Financial Services Association; Ms Leanne Hardwicke, Engineers Australia; Ms Nicola Grayson ACEA; David Parken, Australian Institute of Architects; Tony Adams, International Education Association of Australia; Matt Hingerty, Australian Tourism Export Council; and Ian Birks Australian Information Industry Association.
